Industry Insight w/ G Madison!
Working with music megastars such as Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, and more, G Madison is an amazing dancer, choreographer and an even cooler person!
I met G Madison during the first week I moved to LA when I took his "Performance Hip Hop" class at IDA Hollywood. Soon after, G asked me to work on a video project with him! (which can be viewed here)
What I love most about G and his classes is that he's REAL! He breaks stuff down, teaches us how to perform like we're on a big stage, and he really cares about his students! He doesn't teach just to get a cool video, he actually gives us advice that can be applied both in the studio and in life. I love when he says to "add your own sauce"! He speaks with tons of energy and he loves to answer questions.
I got the chance to sit down with G and ask him a few questions on life in the industry.

INTERVIEW WITH G. MADISON:
Liv: What inspired you to start dancing?
G: What inspired me was to be on stage doing theatre, because my dads an actor, so I started doing acting and then dance was kind of like a movement version of acting, so I wanted to travel around the world and be on stage like my dad was.
Liv: Coolest part about working with a megastar like Mariah Carey?
G: Well I guess, you know you get the perks, the nice hotels, the caviar, but you also get to be on stage in front of people and fans that love music. I love music, and it’s better than just being up there just sweating and doing choreography, but you’re really dancing to music you love and I actually enjoy her music. All of her fans singing her songs with us, it’s just a great feeling.
Liv: If you weren't a dancer & choreographer, what would you do?
G: That’s a good question. I’d probably be like a stay at home dad somewhere, I’d probably be like really really tan, because I’d be like out there getting tan, I’m so kidding I don’t know. Maybe I would be a travel agent or something, something that would get me around the world. That was really my first thing, I want to travel around the world and I want to see everywhere and I want someone else to pay for it. And right now Mariah Carey’s paying for it, thanks MC.
Liv: Where would you love to travel?
G: I spent some time in Greece, I really like Greece, the weather was really great. I’m nowhere longer than three weeks, I love getting around, I would be just a gypsy. I’d be going everywhere. Probably Greece, I love Japan, Germany has some nice places but a little too cold there for me. I also love the Caribbeans. I’d be all over there.
Liv: Is your first name G, or is it an abbreviation?
G: Ooooo! It stands for gentleman. *laughs* It stands for Grandison. My first name is Grandison, my middle name is Madison, my last name is Phelps, and I’m the 4th.
Liv: Best advice for kids and adults who want to become professional dancers?
G: Best advice, I have two things, one is to be open to feedback. My brother taught me that. It’s kind of a scary thing, because this business is all about making everyone feel something making people happy. And being okay to feedback is kind of like a big note, like you get notes from me all the time in class, you get feedback really quickly and it’s your ability to not take it so personally, to keep it art, just kind of take the feedback, apply it, and perform it. I think the last thing I would say is know yourself, be okay with who you are. Be okay with being different. And weird, and short, and tall, and black, and white, and green, and curly hair, and shaved hair, all kinds of different things, just love who you are and be okay with evolving.
Liv: One fun fact about you!
G: One fun fact is I have more shoes than my wife! I guess that’s fun, is that fun?
